The set-up of the Sonnets is that Shakespeare is supposed to be trying to persuade a beautiful young man to settle down, get married, and have a family; but Shakespeare (or “Shakespeare” or “the voice that speaks the Sonnets”) falls in love with the young man. However, as Sonnet 20 points out, “Shakespeare” doesn’t actually want to have sex with him.
